Finally, Baseball!

After some bad weather cancelled a majority of games for local teams last week, we finally have local baseball.

Gregory-Portland and Corpus Christi King were Game One of a Doubleheader at Cabaniss Field to open the evening. Believe it or not, this was also the District opener for 29-5A play. King was thrown right into the fire to open their season after CCISD pulled teams out of the Laredo Border Olympics Tournament last week due to weather.
GP led 3-2 after the first, and it proved to be all they needed. Blaine Elizalde came on in relief for the Wildcats, pitching 5 innings, giving up no runs, and striking out nine. GP got the win 5-2, moving to 1-0 in District 29-5A play. The Wildcats got some offense from four separate players, with Dominic Guerra, Eddie Sanchez, Cole Dowell, and Austin Vasquez all registering 1-hit and 1-RBI each.
While King looked like a solid club, they start the season 0-1 overall, and 0-1 in district. GP starts District play with a 1-0 record, while moving to 1-1 on the season.

GP’s Blaine Elizalde pitches during their matchup with Corpus Christi King on February 25th, 2025 at Cabaniss Field in Corpus Christi.

Corpus christi ray tops Corpus Christi Vets in a top-25 Matchup to open their seasons

The nightcap featured two 5A Top-25 teams, as #23 Corpus Christi Ray served as visitors to #24 Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial. This was a pitching duel from the start, as both aces were on the mound for the season, and district, opening game. Jordan Garza pitched 8.1 innings for Vets, carrying a no-hitter through 6 innings and striking out 12 batters. Lucas Tinajero went 7 innings for the Texans, allowing no runs and striking out 7 batters. Both starters were phenomenal, but a lone run in the top of the 9th off a pitch in the dirt was all that Ray needed to secure a victory. Vets stranded a runner on 3rd in the bottom of the 9th, but a line shot to 3rd Base ended the game.
